Oprah on Breonna Taylor

Updated: Sep 28, 2020

Oprah on Breonna Taylor Oprah Winfrey placed Breonna Taylor on the September issue cover of her magazine- O, The Oprah Magazine. This is the first time Oprah has giving up her cover and it was for a powerful cause. Breonna Taylor was a 26-year-old, African American female who was fatally shot by an officer in her own home. Breonna was merely relaxing in her apartment when 3 officers attempted to serve a no-know warrant on her home for a supposed narcotics investigation. Breonna’s boyfriend was startled by the commotion — driven by the fear, he shot at the polices officers under the impression that there were intruders in the Breonna’s apartment. After the incident, 1 of the three police officers were fired and the remaining kept their jobs on the police force. The death of Breonna Taylor caused an outrage in the Black Lives Matter movement. Mrs. Taylor has become a dominant figure in the movement for civil rights and an end to police brutality. Oprah spoke out against the death of Breonna Taylor saying “She was just like me. She was just like you. And like everyone who dies unexpectedly, she had plans. Plans for a future filled with responsibility and work and friends and laughter”. (O, The Oprah Magazine– September issue). Winfrey takes the stand against police brutality by making Mrs. Taylor the cover of her magazine. “She had plans for the future– Oprah Winfrey” Winfrey did not only feature Breonna in her magazine but also began to place billboards around Louisiana to draw more attention to the dreaded situation. She has purchased 26 billboards to represent each year Breonna lived. These billboards speak out against the system and police brutality. She believes that with enough attention, this could help get justice for Breonna and the thousands of other innocent lives that were taking by law enforcement. These 26 billboards read “Demand that the police involved in killing Breonna Taylor be arrested and charged”. Oprah has also placed a large image of Breonna Taylor alongside of a quote– “If you turn a blind eye to racism, you become an accomplice to it”. Breonna Taylor is one life out of far too many that have been taken because of the racism that lies within our system. We need to begin to recognize this issue and end the death of innocent people.
